CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW


2.1 Cross-linguistic Influence
The study of cross-linguistic influence (CLI), or transfer,is peculiar amonglanguage acquisition and language use phenomena in at least two senses. First,empirical interest in CLI has existed long before the formal establishment of the fieldsthat now claim it as their own (Larsen-Freeman & Long 1991: 5; Odlin 1989: 6).Second, unlike most other well-known factors affecting language acquisition and use(acculturation, anxiety, input,universal principles and parameters), which are ofteninvestigated from the perspective of a particular theoretical stance, research on thetransfer has tended to remain largely exploratory in nature~being driven mainly bytheory-neutral research questions rather than by theory-specific hypotheses. This isnot to say that transfer researchers have had no theoretical interest in CLI. Rather,itis probably because of the complicated nature, broad scope, and the long history ofinterdisciplinary interest in the phenomenon that researchers have tended to follow aconcave-native (or research-then-theory) approach (Rod Ellis 1994: 474) to the studyof CLI.

2.2 Second Language Acquisition VS Third Language Acquisition
For several decades, language acquisition research has attempted to uncover themechanisms underlying the language acquisition process, aiming to provide acomprehensive account of how humans learn their first and their non-native languages.“While much progress has been made, reviews of work conductcd over the past fiftyto sixty years” (Cook 2001; Gass and Selinker 2001; Larsen-Freeman & Long 199];Mitchell and Myles 1998), raise some concern with respect to the restricted focus thatwas applied. Most of the studies available focused on the acquisition of the firstlanguage or on the acquisition of the second language, while studies on Uie acquisitionof languages beyond the L2 are rarely mentioned and are mostly missing. At presentthe onus of highlighting meaningful differences between the acquisition of a secondlanguage and the acquisition of third or additional languages rests upon those whoactively work on multilingualism and language acquisition,who generally support theview that differences between types of acquisition exist and should be accounted for.It is the industrious work done by researchers and scholars in defining terms that leadsto the great achievement of third language acquisition.
