5   Predicament  of  Satisfaction  of  Esteem  Needs  in  the  Novel  Snow White

As Maslow’s statement, at the same period, a person has many kinds of needs. Though in every period, there is always only one kind of needs takes up the preponderant position, any other  kinds  of  needs  will  not  disappear.  Each  level  depends  on  each  other  and  overlaps. Therefore, though people cannot satisfy their safety needs and belongingness and love needs, they still have esteem needs. And because the first two levels are not satisfied well, the esteem needs cannot be satisfied well, either.  As Maslow states, esteem needs can be generally divided into two aspects: self-respect and  respect  from  others.  Self-respect  mainly  refers  to  a  person  who  desires  strength, achievement, confidence independence and freedom. It’s from one’s inner heart. While for the respect from others, it mainly means that a person desires recognition, attention, reputation, status, dominance and appreciation. It’s from the outside world. If a person is very confident and mastery, he can easily get others’ appreciation. In turn, if a person gets others’ recognition, he will become more confident. That is to say, self-respect and respect from others come from the same root, and they influence each other. If this kind of needs can be satisfied well, people will  feel  confident.  But  if  this  level  of  needs  cannot  be  satisfied,  people  will  easily  get  the feeling  of  weakness,  helpless  or  even  desperation.  In  this  novel,  Snow  White,  the  seven dwarfs,  Paul,  Hugo  and  Jane  all  present  the  desire  for  esteem  needs.  But  to  their disappointment,  they  cannot  satisfy  this  level  of  needs  and  eventually  have  to  accept  the disappointing reality. This  part  of  the  thesis  will  mainly  discuss  the  predicament  of  satisfaction  of  esteem needs for the characters in the novel.
