slow’s  need  hierarchy  theory  is  the conclusion  of  human  nature  needs.  Therefore,  though  the  theory  belongs  to  the  field  of psychology,  applying  it  to  analyze  characters  in  literary  works  is  available  and  even  much deeper in understanding the value of works. In addition, every work is produced in a certain social background, so reflecting the realities of the society and the situations of people’s life is one of its values. Snow White written by Barthelme is an influential work which is created in 1960s  and  successfully  lets  readers  know  something  about  the  postmodern  society  and  the state  of  people’s  life.  Maslow’s  need  hierarchy  theory  aims  to  explore  humanity  and  hopes people  in  reality  have  healthy  and  happy  life.  Now  that  the  work  and  the  theory  both  care about  the  human  life  conditions,  the  author  of  the  thesis  applies  the  theory  to  study  Snow White, instead of using other common-used literary theories. Barthelme describes an indifferent and chaotic society where the characters live in Snow White. Since World War II, fairy wishes have been destroyed thoroughly. People face the loss of belief, the collapse of order and tradition, as well as indifferent interpersonal relationship. The  characters  in  the  novel  are  the  postmodern  people  who  are  just  experiencing  spiritual crisis. They live in an age which is ridiculous and has no ultimate meaning. The novel is the description  of  American  social  living  conditions  in  the  1960s  by  Barthelme’s  insight.  The society  develops  rapidly  and  provides  abundant  materials  for  people,  which  make  sure  that people’s physiological needs can be satisfied well. But this satisfaction doesn’t mean people have happy life. As discussed in the thesis, people’s safety needs are not satisfied at all. The pollution  of  environment,  including  the  air  pollution,  chaotic  traffic,  abuse  of  land  and  the increasing  amounts  of  trash,  is  the  most  obvious  side  effects  of  advanced  science  and technology. And the problem of food’s quality and more frequent and destructive crimes and violence  can  threaten  people’s  safety  needs  directly.  Unstable  economy  leads  to  unstable employment,  which  causes  people’s  inner  anxiety.  With  the  development  of  technologies, mass culture begins to take up people’s spiritual life, which disturbs their normal life. What’s worse, the personal privacy is under threat severely. All of them make people feel nervous and anxious.
