Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background 
Disagreement  is  a  speech  act  widely  applied  in  daily  life.  As  we  could  not  find  two identical leaves in the world, people are different from one to another. It is natural for people to  have  different  opinions  in  interlocutions.  Expressing  disagreement  could  be  a  common place  in  conversations.  Though  materials  seem  to  be  abundant,  the  study  of  disagreement would  be  difficult.  The  forms  of  conveying  disagreements  are  extremely  distinctive.  People develop  countless  ways  to  express  or  imply  their  disagreement  with  language,  gestures, intonation  and  other  signs.  Another  obstacle  for  studying  disagreement  is  that  disagreement speech acts have many severity levels ranking from minimal disagreement, partial agreement, all the way to the furious argument. It is different with many other speech acts. For example, when people express attitude, they would never say I want to thank you a little bit. But people are  able  to  say  that  I  would  like  to  disagree  with  you  a  little  bit.  The  changing  in  severity degree  becomes  a  conspicuous  feature  of  disagreement.  So  when  scholars  began  to  study  the taxonomy  of  disagreement,  the  severity  degrees  become  the  standard  for  classification. Taxonomies of disagreement have been provided by Rees-Miller (2000), Blum-Kulka (2002), Wu  (2006),  Netz  (2014)  and  other  scholars.  Most  of  the  taxonomies  are  based  on  the  data analysis  in  one  situation.  The  taxonomies  are  in  detail  and  insightful,  providing  us disagreement’s  characteristics  under  one  particular  communicational  context  within  speakers from certain social groups. But unfortunately, the taxonomies could not coordinate with each other, and some even contradict with each other. So the taxonomy of disagreement might need to  be  refined  based  on  an  all-included  theory,  to  become  a  classification  with  universal applicability.

1.2 Rationale of the study
