 thesis  is  to  optimize  existing  definitions  in  learner’s  dictionaries  and  provide tentative categorization-based definitions. In  order  to  achieve  the  goal  mentioned  above,  the  current  thesis  is  to  answer  the following questions: 1) What  are  the  differences  in  recognizing  semantic  prosodies  between  native speakers and Chinese EFL learners?  2) What  are  the  categories  of  synonyms  that  can  be  differentiated  by  semantic prosody? And what is the role of semantic prosody in differentiating these synonyms? 3) What  are  the  deficiencies  in  existing  learner’s  dictionaries  concerning definitions of synonyms? 4) How to represent synonyms by way of categorization-based definitions in ELDs?

CHAPTER TWO CATEGORIZATION-BASED DEFINITIONS AND SEMANTIC PROSODY: A REVIEW  

2.1 Relevant Studies on Categorization-based Definitions 
Dictionary  definitions  has  experienced  a  theoretical  evolution  from  the  traditional definition,  which  based  on  the  classical  categorization  theory,  to  the  prototypical definition. This section is mainly dedicated to theoretical studies and application of the prototype theory to dictionaries, as well as the research status quo. Faced  with  a  complicated  world,  human  beings  are  always  able  to  see  through  the appearance to perceive the essence and group things to form a category. This process is called  categorization.  Categorization refers  to  the  process  in  which  ideas  and  objects are  recognized,  differentiated,  and  understood  (Cohen  and  Lefebvre  2005).  It  is  an intrinsic  cognitive  ability  of  human  beings.  Without  the  ability,  human  beings  are unable  to  memorize  and  process  concrete  or  abstract  things  in  the  world.  Many researchers  have  deemed  it  essential  and  fundamental  to  be  able  to  categorize  on account  of  its  significant  status  in  human  cognition  (Jakendoff  1983;  Lakoff  1987; Taylor 1989; Wang Yin 2001; Kuang Fangtao and Lin Wenzhi 2015). Lakoff (1987:5) states that “there is nothing more basic than categorization to our thought, perception, action and speech”.

2.2 Current Status of Dictionary Definitions Based on Categorization
