He struggles for his living and he is uneducated. The marriage is clearly a disaster. Lawrence shows much of the difference between the couple.

The wife is responsible，while the husband is irresponsible. She has a high moral instinct while he has low. In Sons and Lovers，Lawrence struck to stress the family clash. As Lawrence says，“The people lived almost entirely by instinct: men of my father’s age could not really read.”④The novel shows us that Mr. Morel’s ways of life and habits are in sharp contrast to Mrs. Morel’s. As a result，most of the quarrels are about money and daily necessities. Mrs. Morel communicates her judgment of her husband to her sons. The children get to mock the father’s manners，to laugh at his shameful low class status. The couple’s conflict remains tense until Mrs. Morel’s death.

When his wife dies，Walter Morel refuses to look directly at her. So，we can come to a conclusion that the conflict between husband and wife is basically grounded on their class difference. Lawrence tries to show that the conflict between the working class and the middle class cannot be reconciled. As a son of the miner，Lawrence is closely related to the working people and quite familiar with the physical and intimate existence.

3.2.2 Social Aspiration of Common People

As we discuss the class issue in Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers，we find that Lawrence ignores the social existence. The typical way to deal with this issue is that Lawrence reveals a fresh perception on the social aspiration of the persons in novels. The social aspirations and the quest for upward mobility seem to be very much on the minds of Lawrence and his fictional characters，especially in Mrs. Morel and Paul，the major figures. We see the most important problem about Mr. Morel and his wife is the different ambitions they have. Lawrence tells us，she is just repressed by modern civilization. As a lady from the good middle class family，Mrs. Morel has a dream of gaining the lost social position her family enjoyed.

We can conclude that Lawrence remains aware of the gaps between class，giving an accurate account of the conflicting values of the working class and the middle class，which is represented in the marriage of the Morels and in the figure’s aspiration.
