Miriam is the first person represented in a symbolical sense. Indeed，in the portraits of Miriam，there is always a striking and characteristic ,a stress on her purified soul. Her symbolic value as a female character is in her repression as well in her purity. In contrast，Clara is depicted as an emotional figure that stands for imagery of physical love and desires. In Paul’s eyes，Clara is a striking woman whose fat figure will attract him every moment into a passionate experience. Lawrence’s attitude toward Walter Morel is strikingly ambivalent, just as his attitude toward his own father. So，Walter Morel is generally shown as drunken，brutal，uneducated and irresponsible toward his family.

Conclusion

To sum up，we learn of the struggle of men and women in the division between spiritual and physical love Paul has experienced. We also learned Lawrence’s insistence on viewing the body and soul as a whole as the part of the natural love. In the novel，we can feel Lawrence’s class-consciousness in the unequal mating of Mr. and Mrs. Morel. Lawrence gains a detailed picture of the class contrast concerning their educational background and personal ambition.

As a result，the disappointed wife leans on her son to compensate for what she has lost. But Paul eventually ends up in failure under his mother’s unnatural wish to better him . Apart from the subject matter mentioned above，another aspect of the novel’s modernism implications lies in its technical method. With the symbols of nature and characters，Lawrence has proved himself master with feeling and hidden thoughts. So we may come to the conclusion that it is certainly a work of striking original genius. Lawrence has produced a most appreciative and imaginative masterpiece of twentieth century.

The significance and value of the novel lies in that Lawrence diagnoses the evils of society and suggest cures. So far as we have discussed about the modernist implication in Sons and Lovers，we may come to the conclusion that it is certainly a work of striking original genius. However, Lawrence fails to thoroughly examine the psychological conflicts he set up in the novel. His cardinal error is that he tries to overcome the evils of capitalist society by giving free rein to all human natural instincts，especially，the sexual desire. This is Lawrence’s logic thought and the weakness of his works as well. All in all，D·H·Lawrence will always be regarded as the most influential writer in modern literature.
