And it’s also during that time when Cicero, the great politician, orator andwriter in ancient Rome, put forward his evaluation rule that poor interpreters justprovide literal translations.The Medieval Age is great times for the interpreting profession. Valued andrespected, interpreters play an important role not only in trading and cross-nationnegotiations, but more importantly in religion, or rather specifically, in the spread ofChristianity. Many crusade interpreters work for monasteries, as they do their jobs atcouncils or synods for monks of different nationalities and also accompa nymissionaries or preachers overseas. To create a universal language was then for thefirst time proposed, tried and failed, inside the religious field and often based on thekabala (Jewish mythic philosophy). And interpreting remained the most effectivemethod to facilitate communication among people with different languages.With the voyage out by Columbus, the era of discovery overseas became anothergolden age for interpreting.
