0.1 Research Significance研究意义

Under this circumstance, literary works play asignificant role. However, literary translation is not an easy task. The translator shouldrespect the source language writer and consider the reception of target languagereaders, and thus s/he faces the great difficulty of how to balance the two factors.Ah Q Zheng Zhuan，a masterpiece of Chinese literature, has been translated intomany languages. In this thesis, English versions translated by Yang Xianyi and GladysYang and Julia Lovell are selected for analysis. The Yangs and Lovell translated thisstory for different purposes. The former wanted to introduce to Western world fineChinese culture and literature through representing the story as it is, while the latterintended to present an interesting Chinese story to Western readers and explain tothem why Lu Xun has won broad respect within China by transferring his creativestyle and critical thought. Different translation purposes may call for differenttranslation strategies. Therefore, these two English versions are selected so as toanalyze how the Skopos of translation can affect the target text.Through a comparative study of the two English versions of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan’this thesis intends to find out the underlying principles and strategies for literarytranslation, particularly for culture-loaded words and expressions, with the goal ofhelping improve the quality of literary translation, which in turn will facilitate theintroduction of Chinese culture to other parts of the world.

0.2 Objectives of the Research研究目标
By a comparative study of two English versions of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan from thefunctional perspective, particularly Skopos Theory, the thesis intends to affirm(1) that functional theories can be applied to literary translation.(2) that different translating strategies adopted by different translators arereasonable, considering different purposes of translation.(3) that translation criticism should not only focus on the level of equivalence orfaithfulness, but also on the purpose of translation.By comparing and evaluating the two versions in terms of translation purpose,translation brief, and translation strategies, this thesis will try to answer the followingquestions:(1) What kinds of translation strategies are adopted in the two English versionsof Ah Q Zheng Zhuanl(2) How is one translation different from the other?(3) What are the considerations of different translators who choose differenttranslating strategies?(4) How can functional theories guide literary translation?(5) Why can functional theories be applied as a suitable guidance on literarytranslation?
