摘要:In Wordsworth’s The Daffodils, the fluttering and dancing daffodils disclose the inner world of Wordsworth. His heart is still adhering to the secular world. In Wang Wei’s Magnolia Slope, the blooming flowers in the deep valley disclose the inner world of Wang Wei thoroughly.

3.1.1 The Connotation of the Daffodil

Among the history of English literature, daffodil is not merely a kind of flower, it also has its unique connotation. In English, the word daffodil has two names: “daffodil” and “narcissus”. Narcissus is from the Greek mythology, a man was strikingly handsome when he was young. But his mother was told that his life would be very short. If he wanted to prolong his life, he must never see his own face. However, his refusal to goddess Echo, made Echo pale and wan. Thus his behavior incurred the vengeance from gods, and making him fall in love with his own reflection in the water. Catching his own shadow, he was drowned in the end and reincarnated into the flower. This flower is called Narcissus; hence the daffodil became the synonym of narcissism.

Wordsworth lost his mother early in life. As a result he got little care and love from his parents. At the beginning, he was a really talented poet, his friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge praised him greatly, and who was also a representative of romantic poems. He had said that Wordsworth was a great person; he had surpassed me in all aspects. Actually Coleridge was much more famous than Wordsworth, who was called the most talented and creative thinker by the young scholars in 18th century.
Under the spell of the French Revolution, Wordsworth adhered to liberty and democracy, but the failure of the French Revolution disappointed him desperately. He sanded into dejection as deep as his hopes had been high, and, as he slowly recovered from his disappointment, he became more and more conservative in the politics and less in sympathy with any violent reactions. Under such circumstances, he was inevitably melancholy and conceited. During his last forty years, Wordsworth lost the inspiration gradually; he merely imitated his early works for most of the times. He was worshiping his former achievement and talent. In the history of English literature, Wordsworth was called “the degraded leader”. The latter half of Wordsworth’s life was just like Narcissus, who was drowned in the water, lifeless and spiritless. The Daffodils hinted the latter period of Wordsworth’s life.
3.1.2 The Connotation of the Magnolia
The magnolia in Wang Wei’s Magnolia Slope demonstrates the entirely different meanings. Lotus bloomed and fell in the quiet valley, the flourishing flowers were not affected by the quiet gully, and they were still blooming. Lotus here symbolizes the characteristics of the poet.
In the history of Chinese literature, there were few poets who can balance the artistic reality and the reality of human life, Wang Wei is one of them. No mater in the poem or in real life, poet was always keeping the quality of being indifferent and detached to fame and wealth.
In the history of Chinese poetry, traditionally, many poets choose vanilla and beauty to express their emotions. Such consuetude was advocated by the poets of different dynasties. Qu Yuan in the poem Li Sao sings that “In the morning I drank dew drops on the lily magnolia / in the evening I ate flowers of the autumn chrysanthemum”. From this sentence, we could see that poet uses the elegance of magnolia, the modesty of chrysanthemum and the purity of lotus to express the chastity of his inner world, viz his will not going along with the others in their evil deeds. Chrysanthemum became the synonym of lofty morals and noble character since Tao Yuan论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
