摘要:In Wordsworth’s The Daffodils, the fluttering and dancing daffodils disclose the inner world of Wordsworth. His heart is still adhering to the secular world. In Wang Wei’s Magnolia Slope, the blooming flowers in the deep valley disclose the inner world of Wang Wei thoroughly.
rds reflect that the flowers will not be sluggish for no one noticing its beauty, and she will not boast its beauty painstakingly. Afterwards she is still blooming in the deep valley. Moreover no one pays more attention to her. They are blooming and falling quietly in the mountains, such insipidly, naturally and simply, without the painstaking efforts paid, without the pursuit of fame and wealth, such spirit is similar to Wang Wei’s state of mind from the bottom of his heart.
Wang Wei had succeeded in the political field, but he did not indulge himself in it, he returned to nature to seek the true essence of life. He lived simply and happily. Maybe after experiencing all the secular disturbances, returning to nature and Buddhism is the best choice. As a matter of fact, there are few people who can reach this level of state of mind. This is where the poet’s charm lies. The poet’s transcendence can hardly be found in the others.
In Wordsworth’s The Daffodils, poet’s loneliness and melancholy emerges in the poem, and he endeavors to seek harmony with nature, to seek pleasure from it. But he can only obtain the joy for a while, because his heart is still sticking to the secular world. He can not really gain the essence of Buddhism, emptiness. However, Wang Wei has really gained the essence of Buddhism, having an idyllic and simply life is where happiness lies.
Both Wordsworth and Wang Wei are faithful to nature; both acquire the pleasure from nature. But Wordsworth can only get a temporary pleasure , while Wang Wei has got the eternal pleasure from nature, because both his body and mind are dedicated to nature, in another word, he has lost the interest to the secular world. Just like the magnolia flowers, blooming in the quiet valley, the quality of the flowers is the same as the poet’s personality. He really gains the true essence of Buddhism.

The selfward state means observing the world subjectively, thus all things are engraved with my opinions; selfless state means observing the world objectively, seeing the things as it was. So we can not make a clear distinction between me and the substance.
Subjective observation means that poets describe the outside world with their powerful emotional coloring. So the scenery described by them is permeating with serious personal coloring. That is the “selfward state”.
Objective observation means that poet appreciates the outside world with an ordinary state of mind. He is merely attracted by the scenery, and melting himself into the scenery, reaching a state where me and the outside world are well combined. This is the “selfless state”.
There are differences between the two kinds of state of mind, namely, the former emphasizes emotion, while the latter scenery. The poet observes the world with subjective mind in the first state, while in the second state, things works the other way.
Appreciating the two poems according to the above criteria, Wordsworth’s The Daffodils and Wang Wei’s Magnolia Slope are the best models of “selfward state” with “subjective observation” and “selfless state” with “objective observation”. In Wordsworth’s The Daffodils, the daffodils are not merely a kind o
