摘要:Nowadays with the worship of money and the lack of heroic fiber being widely circulated, the reading and studying of Longfellow’s A Psalm of life and The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls is very significant, since they can stimulate the sparks of our dreams and enthusiasm on life. Longfellow believes that the charm of art is everlasting and the spiritual flame of striving forward will never go out.

because they die; there is always something more to be hopeful and optimistic for. Longfellow begins discussing how humans must live their lives in constant anticipation for the next day under the belief that it will be better than each day before it: "But to act that each to-morrow / Find us farther than to-day."(David Lehman, 2006:215)
In the subsequent stanza, Longfellow asserts that there is never an infinite amount of time to live, but art that is created during one's life can be preserved indefinitely and live on long after its creator dies. In the following stanzas, Longfellow likens living in the world to fighting on a huge field of battle.
He believes that people should lead heroic and courageous lives and not sit idle and remain ineffectual while the world rapidly changes around them: "Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife!"(姜涛,2006:90) His use of the word "strife" is especially interesting, since it clearly acknowledges that life is inherently difficult, is a constant struggle, and will never be easy. Longfellow then encourages everyone to have faith and trust the lord and not to rely on an unknown future to be stable and supportive.
In the poem, Longfellow advises that we are all here on Earth to live for today rather than waiting for death to take us. The message in A Psalm for Life clearly illustrates that even in adversity we are to persevere and never give up. According to Longfellow, time is too swift to wait for death.
2.1.4The Meaning of The Tide Raises, the Tide Falls
In Longfellow’s poem The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls, he alludes to death as being an inevitable mystery that every living being must endure at the termination of life. He also implies that the initiation and termination of each day symbolizes a countdown to one's death. The speaker symbolizes death with the sea as "the sea in the darkness calls". (姜涛,2006:91) Near the end of his life, he once again seems to believe that life and everything that occurred during one's life is worthless because the sea will "efface the footprints in the sand”. He believes that everything he accomplished during his life will be worthless once he passes on. The fact that he constantly uses "the tide rises and the tide falls" also alludes to the fact that nothing is everlasting. "The day returns, but nevermore returns the traveler to the shore". His perspective on life seems to be that once you die, time and everyone else's life keeps on going without being affected, which alludes to the fact that he believes life and humans are insignificant. Near the end of his life, he believes humans only live to die.
The tide rising and falling is pretty much the progression of life. The first stanza is about the traveler dying. The dark scenery adds to the effect that the traveler is dying. The curlew also adds to that effect because it is a bird that usually comes out at night. The ocean maybe used to symbolize that the traveler has come to peace with death and realizes that he will eventually have to die. The second stanza is what happens after death. The footprints being washed away by the waves symbolizes that you may be forgotten after death. The third stanza symbolizes that life does continue even if you are not around to see it. The tide will continue to rise and fall just like life will go on and people may die along the way.论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
