摘要:Nowadays with the worship of money and the lack of heroic fiber being widely circulated, the reading and studying of Longfellow’s A Psalm of life and The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls is very significant, since they can stimulate the sparks of our dreams and enthusiasm on life. Longfellow believes that the charm of art is everlasting and the spiritual flame of striving forward will never go out.
death from coming.
Invoking the elements of popular romanticism that was popular in many writers' works of the time period in which the poem was written, Longfellow portrays death as a fact of life, an inevitable occurrence to be accepted, but not feared. The symbolic nature of the tides suggest that death, like the ocean, is ceaseless, and forever. Just as one cannot stop the tides of the ocean erasing their "footprints in the sands", or rather their existence in the world, one cannot stop death from claiming his/her life.
The tide rising and falling, contrasts, or is just the opposite of man, in that it is a constant like time. Time marches on. This is nature. Whereas, man has a time limit here on earth. Man will die. Man can keep coming to the tide for every day of his entire life. The only difference would be that the man will become older, and eventually, must die and cease to come. The tide is anew. Man will die, but the tide will continue to rise and fall, whether he is alive to see it or not. The tide is forever young, while man is forever older. Man has a time limit, while tide and time have none.
2.3 Longfellow’s Attitude towards Life in the Two Poems
The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls makes more sense when compared to his earlier poem, A Psalm of Life, which he wrote as a young man. In fact the poem is quite solemn in comparison as it portrays each person as making little difference on life as a whole. In A Psalm of life he states that we can in fact leave footprints on the sands of time. In The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls, however, he contradicts this by saying the footprints will be erased. In other words, we will not leave much of a mark on human society, as we will be quickly forgotten. Life will go on whether we are in it or not. As a young man he portrays a certain sense of optimism whereas in this poem that is lost.
Above all, both A Psalm of life and The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls provide a complete view toward human life, which is when we are still alive, we should live a vigorous life and pass away peacefully. Since we are alive in this world, we behave, and we work hard and harvest what we have got. Till one day when we pass away, we wouldn’t be in a state of sorrows and morrows. We will become part of the firmament peacefully. On the funeral of Longfellow, Emerson said “The man we have just buried under the ground is a sweet and beautiful sound. And only now I can not remember his name.”(黄新渠,1998:46) Maybe this is the briefest remarks on Longfellow and his view toward life. A view of life deserves all the compliments of men. The two poems stress the importance of a full and sincere activity in making the most of life’s brief span, rather than succumbing to moods of vain regret or dejection.
III. The Moral Lessons Involved in the Two Poems
Tens of thousands of people lost loved ones in the Sichuan earthquake. Many more are sharing the sorrow caused by the disaster. Daughters have lost their mothers. Fathers have lost their sons. Tens of thousands of students no longer have a place to study. They are sick, suffering, scared and need our help right now.
These survivors face an uncertain future. They have lived through experiences that are emotionally traumatic. They may feel that things will never be “normal” again, and they may feel empty or hopeless about the future. If mishand
