摘要:Nowadays with the worship of money and the lack of heroic fiber being widely circulated, the reading and studying of Longfellow’s A Psalm of life and The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls is very significant, since they can stimulate the sparks of our dreams and enthusiasm on life. Longfellow believes that the charm of art is everlasting and the spiritual flame of striving forward will never go out.

/> There are many themes in the poem. The most obvious of which is that of man pitting himself against nature. In this case the man loses. The Tide rises and the tide falls is an obvious indication that nature itself will overcome everything that man tries to do to overcome it. The tide will keep rising and falling and the traveler is forgotten. The second message is about the futility of our own existence. In the grand scheme of things, the one life of the traveler, which can be seen as an echo of our own, is subsumed by the power of nature, represented by the tide, and more importantly by the power of time. The tide in this case is also a representation of time as it is relentless in its riding and falling, marking the days and unceasing. The final theme, linked to the one above, is about our actions. The traveler is certain that the thing that he has to do or the message that he has to take is important and worth the risk of trying to beat the tide, or trying to beat nature, or trying to beat time. His deed is worth more than all of these to him, but the tide and time wash him and his deed away, just as time can render all of our individual actions null and void.
Longfellow is describing the world and the people in it. The tides represent the world continuing even after we have moved on. The different scene that he depicts is the life that one may lead. Life or Death, the world goes on and people become a faded memory, for one day the last person to remember you will also face the final curtain call.   This poem indicates that time never stops, that mankind is nothing compared to nature— the one constant— “The tide rises, the tide falls” day in and day out.
2.2Longfellow's Whole View of Life in the Two Poems
In A Psalm of life, Longfellow shows his essential insight toward life by making the purpose and the main theme very clearly, which is what life is.
In the poet’s opinion, life isn’t like a dream, but should be faced with sincerely and enthusiasm. Our lives should not end in the tomb. The words from the Bible say “Dust thou art, to dust returned” which should only interpreted from the perspective of human body. However the spirit of human being will never disappear. The soul of human being is everlasting. Therefore, the real purpose of life is neither for leading a life for pleasure, nor just signing mournfully all day long. The real purpose of life should be taking action, and only in that way can we make progress. That is what the poet thinks the real life should be. So that we have found what the real life is, and what we should do now is to spend our life.
The poet tells us that in order to live a positive life, we should make the best use of today, not tomorrow. Because time flies and life time is short, therefore, in stead of relying on tomorrow, we should cherish every minute of the present day, no matter how beautiful tomorrow would be. While at the same time, we should learn to let the past things go and let the past buries itself deep under the ground. The positive attitude on life requires us to take action as soon as possible when we are still alive. As to how we can get started to take action, the poet tells us that we should never be driven like the cows are driven by the herdsman. Instead, we should be a hero during the process of encountering hardships. So what is the value and significance of doing this? Longfellow thinks that the e论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
