1.3 Rationale for the Study研究方向
There are several reasons for the researcher to choose to study the present topic.Firstly, reading proficiency is important, but hard to improve. In the pastdecades, College English reading teaching drew much attention. In 1999,theCollege English Syllabus for non-English Majors was revised; in March,2003,theMinistry of Education, PRC started an overall program: the Program of TeachingQuality and Teaching Reform in Institutions of Higher Education; in January, 2004,the Teaching Requirements of College English (tried out) was also released. They allemphasize improving students' communicative competence, especially cultivatingthem a comparatively high level of reading competence. In the latest survey ofCollege English teaching situation (2010), 44.9% people claim that reading skill ismost important of all in EFL learning (Wang 2011). However, the traditionalgrammar teaching approach has long dominated College English reading class withpoor effect. Students often complain they still have low efficiency in readingcomprehension even though they have spent much time and energy in learningreading and have mastered abundant vocabulary,grammar structures. Many collegestudents even after their graduation still suffer from the pressure of EFL reading fortheir professional and academic purposes. All these situations indicate that it isurgent for the students' reading competence to be strengthened. Therefore, thisis triggered to explore a feasible EFL reading teaching approach to efficientlyimprove students' reading competence.Secondly, Theme-Rheme theory is very practicable in discourse analysisbecause Theme analysis can bring readers a valuable insight into the macro-structureand coherence of a text; TP analysis can help readers grasp the thread of a text as wellas its development method. That is why many linguists and researchers both abroadand at home have perceived Theme-Rheme theory as a fundamental factor to result insuccessful reading. Thus it is significant to make college EFL teachers and studentsaware that employment of this theory in text analysis is an effective device to promoteEnglish reading teaching and learning. As a result, the present study aims to provethe effectiveness of applying Theme-Rheme theory to College English readingteaching in perfecting EFL reading teaching and students' reading competence.Thirdly, the empirical studies of Theme-Rheme theory and its application arenot plentiful on account of the inconvenience of data collection and analysis,so it isessential to offer more precise data and referential information to enrich theresearches in this field. Consequently, the present study designs a researchexperiment involving its own samples and subjects and collects accurate data forquantitative analysis. By doing so,this study intends to provide the reliableevidence to testify the validity of the hypothesis that application of Theme-Rhemetheory to College English reading teaching can facilitate to enhance students' readingproficiency.
