Many  researches  have  made  many  achievements  both  in  theory  and  practice.  At  the same  time,  they  also  try  to  apply  multimodality  to  language  teaching  and  provide many  valuable  suggestions.  However,  in  China,  the  application  of  multimodality  in education  is  still  in  the  initial  stage.  Most  researches  are  related  to  the  introduction and  construction  of  the  theoretical  basis  of  multimodality,  but  few  are  empirical studies.  In this case,  researchers in China should conduct more teaching experiments in order to fill in the gap.

2.1 Research on Teaching Reading 
Since  this  research  focuses  on  teaching  reading,  researches  related  to  reading should  be  discussed  first.  In  this  part,  the  definition  of  reading  and  three  important reading teaching models are introduced.There  have  been  a  lot  of  researches  on  reading.  Many  scholars  have  their  own definitions for reading which are different from each other. From some psychologists’ and linguists’ view, reading is a decoding process and is only the recognition of words. With  the  development  of  linguistics  and  psychology,  more  and  more  scholars  have realized the fact that reading is a complex psychological process (Gollasch 1982).  In fact, reading is essentially a matter of transferring meaning from mind to mind and  of  passing  messages  from  writers  to  readers.  To  guarantee  this  kind  of  transfer, the  reader,  the  writer  and  the  text  should  all  contribute  positively  to  the  reading process.  The  reading  passages  or  text  materials  are  the  carrier  of  information  and writers  transmit  information  to  the  outside  world  through  them.  Meanwhile,  readers extract information from the reading passages and process the information.  Reading  ability  is  of  vital  importance  and  reading  comprehension  is  a  complex process.  In  order  to  get  some  messages  from  reading  passages,  readers  need  proper reading ability and skills. When reading materials, different readers may apply various strategies which they like or are used to using.
