2.2 Research on Multimodality 
In this part, the author presents a literature review of researches on application of multimodality to teaching. First of all, the author defines multimodality by comparing three pairs of important  concepts; then, researches on multimodality in teaching both at home and abroad are summarized; last, the author introduces the theories related to deigning multimodality in teaching. According  to  Kress  &  Leeuwen  (2001),  media  is  defined  as  the  material resources  used  for  the  production  of  meaning.  In  this  definition,  the  key  word  is ―material‖, so the media is material in nature. Here, an example can be listed: a book is one kind of media. Another definition may be a little more clear, medium refers to how  texts  are  disseminated  or  propagated,  including  printed  book, CD-ROM(Compact Disc Read-Only Memory), or computer application. In  this  case,  the  definition  of  multimedia  is  not  so  hard  to  understand. Multimedia  can  be  defined  on  the  basis  of  that  of  media.  There  is  a  definition  from Wikipedia,  ―multimedia  is  media  and  content  that  uses  a  combination  of  different content  forms.  The  term  is  used  in  contrast  to  media  which  use  only  rudimentary computer  display  such  as  text  or  traditional  forms  of  printed  material.  Multimedia includes  a  combination  of  text,  audio,  still  images,  animation,  video,  or  interactivity content  forms.‖  In  summary,  multimedia  refers  to  the  tools  for  teachers  to  show pictures, play recordings and so on.
