Chapter One Introduction
1.1 The origin of the study
On September 11, 2010,I. became a postgraduate student in the ForeignLanguages College of Zhejiang Normal University majoring in English education. Icame to study here for two purposes. For one thing, I had been an English teacher in acollege for more than 4 years, but I came across a lot of problems in my class. Forexample, many students were not interested in English, and most of the time, theywere not willing to answer my questions and I had to call their names to answer myquestions. For another thing, I majored in business English in my undergraduatelearning and did not have a systematic knowledge on English teaching, so I wanted tostudy more knowledge about English education and so on. Therefore, Zhejiang^Normal University became a good place to enrich myself.I clearly remembered the first class of my postgraduate study. Mrs. Wang, who ismy tutor, went into the classroom with her happy little smile,I felt very warm andpleasant. She gave us a great surprise in the class. She firstly introduced herself thenshe told her teaching plan for the semester. She asked everyone to do a presentationon the platform. The students should cooperate with others and two or three studentsconnected to a group according to the same interests. Then she gave us some topics tochoose. Then we discussed which topic to choose and looked for partners. I stillremOTibered that the whole class was full of warm atmosphere and nearly everyonewas absorbed in their interesting topics. At that moment, every student became anorator. Meanwhile, Mrs. Wang came around the students' groups to listen to our ideasand gave us some advice. After class,I began to reflect on my past teaching life. Inmy class,I always focused on teaching language knowledge rather than usinglanguage. I often paid attention to the students' scores rather than what they hadlearned. I usually talked too much in class, and my students listened and followed myinstruction. What's worse,I did not know what their genuine interest and curiositywere, so my class was just like a quiet lake.

1.2 Aims and significance of the study
Nowadays, the traditional education mode, which focuses on teacher andtextbook,exists in many college English classes. This model does not adapt to thelearning society of 21st century and the requirement of lifelong learning. What's more,it can't cultivate students' autonomous and cooperative learning ability.In the past decades,the researchers have done a lot of studies on learningcommunity at home and abroad,but few researchers have focused on the classroomlearning community. Unfortunately, the researches in this respect seem particularlyimportant to teachers due to their everyday's work. Therefore,this paper tries toenrichment the study of classroom learning community.The study attempts to nurture a classroom learning community to alter thetraditional model of college English class. What's more,it would explore the impactson college English learners through nurturing the classroom learning comnumity. Atthe same time, it provides a new idea to today's foreign language teaching.
