WiththedisseminationoftheChineseculture,TraditionalChineseMedicine(TCM)is being increasingly recognized by the international community to be one ofComplementary andAlternative Medicine in the Western Medical systems.Apart fromenhancing its theory and practical treatment, TCM should be integrated into the worldmainstream medicine as well (傅俊英 2008). To improve the status of TCM in theinternational community, the Chinese Government, and TCM learners from home andabroad have made great efforts such as prompting practical treatment, researching, andteaching. As a result, TCM teaching is becoming increasingly popular, training bothChinese and foreign learners. For TCM learners in foreign countries, going to China tostudy has become a necessity.

From July to December 2019, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, togetherwith Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, offered the systematicalclinical courses in JiangsuProvincialHospital ofTraditionalChineseMedicine toTCMstudents fromAustralia.TheAustralianstudents havealreadylearnedmuch aboutTCMtheoryandthenamesofcommonlyusedChinesemedicine,fortheyarecollegestudentsof the fifth year. In clinical rooms, they are not merely observers but learners, and theteachers are the doctors in the hospital. In the pediatric department, the doctors arespecialized in bothTCM pediatricsandWestern Medicinepediatrics, which places highdemands on the interpreter’s background knowledge of both Traditional ChineseMedicine and Western Medicine. Therefore, interpreters are badly needed to serve as abridge between Chinese and Australian cultures to facilitate the clinical course in thehospital. The reporter worked as a part-time interpreter at the Pediatric departmentduring the period between July andAugust 2019 to interpret the dialogues between thedoctors and patients for theAustralian students.

1.2 The Interpreting Procedure

The interpreting procedure not just refers to the actual interpreting process in theclinic room, but also the preparation period before interpreting and post-interpretingfeedback.

Before the project, the reporter had already learned someTCM knowledge, for shegraduated from Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine as an English major studentand had the lessons of Introduction to basic Chinese Medicine lesson, Introduction tobasicWestern Medicine andmedical English.Therefore, thereporter thought it notverydifficult for her to accept and interpret TCM-related messages.

Onemonthbefore theproject in June, the reporterserved as apart-timeinterpreter.Since then, the host, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, set up the training classevery Tuesday and Saturday for the interpreters to learn TCM knowledge, mainlyconcerned with commonly used medical terms of several departments, but the terms ofPediatrics were not mentioned. Therefore, the reporter searched online for Pediatricdiseases and symptoms and spent most of the timereciting the medical terms but ignorethe other things, for example, learning the theory and differentiation of syndromes.
