Chapter One Literature Review
1.1 Researches on World Englishes
The study of World Englishes emerged in the 1980s. It is an inevitable outcomeof the rapid internationalization and localization of English after the WWⅡ. Theinternationalization of English makes English language shift from the single andhomogeneous “traditional Standard English” to “world Englishes”. As an internationallanguage tool, English is playing an increasingly important role in worldwidecommunication at present. The frequent contact of English and other languages fosterthe nativization of English universally, after which many English varieties come intobeing, such as Canadian English, Australian English, Indian English, South AfricanEnglish, Singapore English, Hong Kong English and Japanese English. BritishEnglish and American English are no longer recognized to be sole Standard English,but only two kinds of world English varieties in Britain and the United States. In thepast 30 years, many linguists in world Englishes research field launched a widelydiscussion around the spread of English language. Generally speaking, these relevantstudies focus more on cultural influence and ideology than language characteristics,and most of the researches are limited to the level of pronunciation, vocabulary andsyntax as to the language features. With the worldwide spread of English and itsinternationalization, the researches on world Englishes have aroused intense scholarlyinterest among many linguists.

1.2 Diachronic Studies of China English
As far as China is concerned,there are always some particular things and phenomena for us to express in both oraland written English” (Ge Chuangui 1980). Such as “Four Books”, “Five Classics”,“May Fourth Movement”, “eight-legged essay”, “baihuawen”, “xiucai”, “TwoHundreds Policy”, “four modernizations” and so on. Ge concluded that all theseexpressions are not Chinese English or Chinglish but China English. These translationversions may be not understood by foreigners at the first sight but after necessaryexplanations they are intelligible because of their correct grammar (Ge Chuangui,1980). From the perspective of translation, he regards China English as an inevitableversion in expressing specific phenomena in China.Ge is the first person to propose the notion of China English. He analyzes itscharacteristics and points out its objective existence. However, he doesn't make anexplicit definition of China English and his study is restricted to the level ofvocabulary in translation field rather than language variety. Although some limitationsexist, his great researches cast new light upon our latter related studies. The study ofGe Chuangui confirms the objectivity and intelligible of China English. The studyalso pushes forward the comparative study of China English and Chinese Englishwhich confirms the acceptability of China English in communication.
