2.2 Denotative Meanings of a Word
In  1974,  Geoffrey  Leech  discovered  and  divided  the  semantic  meanings  of  a word into its conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, affective meaning, reflective meaning,  social  meaning,  collocative  meaning  and  thematic  meaning,  all  together,  a word holds seven types of meanings. .  In  his  further  explanation  of  the  seven  definitions,  Leech  said  the  conceptual meaning  of  a  word  makes  up  the  central  meaning,  it  is  “denotative”  in  that,  it  is concerned with the relationship between a word and the thing it denotes, or refers to, that  is  to  say,  it  is  rather  clear  that  the  conceptual  meanings  of  a  word  are  also  its “denotative meanings”, it has the feature of conceptual, typical and objective. In the sense, the denotative meanings are the central or core meanings of a word , they are simple meanings of a word, or just the name or label of the certain word, are collected  in  the  dictionaries,  it  is  also  called  “dictionary  meanings  of  a  word”,  with this guideline, we can say that the denotative meanings of a word in a language refer to the basic and common concepts that can be learned or understood, for instance, the denotative meanings of the Chinese word of “Xi” are the meanings of   “happiness, delighted, pleased and be found of”, these meanings are widely used in the Chinese language widely and deeply comprehended by the Chinese people without doubt, so as to say, if the word is translated, the part of its denotative meanings can be easily passed  over  and  accepted  by  the  readers  without  the  language  background  or difficulty.
