Chapter Four Data Analysis and Discussion

4.1 Introduction

As what is illustrated in chapter three, metonymy is generally a mental process and the understanding of address forms involves a cognitive process of metonymy in many cases. There is a systemic metonymic process behind the producing of the address forms and this cognitive process can be specifically categorized into many models. And this chapter is going to provide data analysis to illustrate the metonymic models mentioned in chapter three. It starts with a data analysis with address forms collected from the classical work Romance of the Three Kingdoms and then divides them into different classes according to the respective metonymic model. Romance of the Three Kingdoms, written by Luo Guanzhong in the 14th century, is acclaimed as one of the major four Chinese masterpieces and is arguably the most widely read historical novel in late imperial and modern China. Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a Chinese historical novel based upon events in the turbulent years near the end of the Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms era of China, starting in 169 and ending with the reunification of the land in 280. It describes the political and military fighting among the three states Wei, Shu and Wu under the governing of Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Quan respectively with a basic principle that “domains under heaven, after a long period of union, tend to divide; after a long period of division, tend to unite”. Romance of the Three Kingdoms covers the historical upheavals in about one hundred years from the end of the Han Dynasty to the beginning of the Jin Dynasty. It vividly describes the political and military struggles in the Three Kingdoms era and reflects the dramatic contradictions in the society.
