2 Literature Review
2.1 Definition
Mock politeness means that people choose to talk to others gently or politely in interactions, which could narrow the distance between speakers and hearers superficially and could reflect speakers’ upbringing or even could establish their own identity, however, as a matter of fact, we can see such discourses which are gentle and decent, could actually deny the listener's face or identity. (Li Chengtuan, Ran Yongping, 2014) Rapport management proposed by Spencer-Oatey refers to the management of harmony-disharmony in interaction among people, which incorporated two components: the management of face and the management of sociality rights. 2.2 Review of Politeness Research
From 1970s, many scholars of pragmatics seem to have a soft spot for politeness, and we can even treat politeness as a branch of pragmatics study. Lakoff (1973), Brown and Levinson(1978) and Leech(1983) et al proposed theories of politeness which are considered as complimentary to cooperation principle, which help to answer some questions that conversational implications could not solve during verbal communication, thus enrich and develop the theory of conversational implications and also push forward the development of pragmatics. Politeness is not only a pragmatic phenomenon, but also a kind of communicative
strategy, which can reduce conflict in interactions and maintain harmonious interpersonal relations. Furthermore, pragmatics is not concerned whether what the person really wants to talk to others is friendly, but the impact which his words have on the listener. People should not say whether a speech act is polite or impolite without any contexts, that is to say, language forms cannot determine whether the speech act is polite or impolite, but politeness is the result of interactions of the three factors: language forms, context and the relations between speaker and hearer. Studies of politeness have been numerous, domestically and abroad. So next, this thesis will have a brief introduction about politeness.
