mainly focuses on linguistic features of the text itself. In this part, the contrastive analysis will be carried out mainly from two aspects: classification and transitivity. According to Hodge and Kress (1979), classification is at the basis of language and thought and no one could relate concepts or message without adoption of classification because words and concepts only exist through classification. As social beings we learn how to classify the world and we learn the world through classification. The classification in discourse is mainly realized by means of word choice. In news reports, due to the journalists’ different political stances and different ideologies, the same event is often described with different words and different phrases by the different news media. That is, classification manifests different values and ideologies. Therefore, a contrastive analysis of classification in The Guardian and China Daily is worthwhile to be studied.

Conclusion
After a detailed contrastive critical analysis of the news reports in The Guardian and China Daily on the topic of the Occupy Central movement of Hong Kong with the assist of Fairclough’s three-dimensional model, the three research questions which are mentioned in Chapter One can be answered as follows: First of all, in terms of linguistic features, both classification and transitivity have been carried out in the stage of description to explore the differences in these selected news reports. In the classification part, The Guardian and China Daily show their different attitudes by carefully choosing different words. The Guardian tends to regard the Occupy Central movement as a legal and progressive movement launched by brave and innocent Hong Kong citizens to oppose the tough and tyrannical central government. While China Daily takes the Occupy Central movement as an illegal movement causing bad effects on Hong Kong society. With regard to transitivity, six processes are analyzed to show the differences of the news reports. In The Guardian, the actions of the demonstrators are employed to depict a positive image of demonstrators while in China Daily the material processes are used to stress the bad effects of the illegal movement on Hong Kong society. The verbal behaviors of the demonstrators are focused in The Guardian to illustrate a good image of the movement while diverse Sayers in China Daily make the news
