Traditional Chinese Medicine, originated in China, is a medical system based onChinesetraditionalculture,anditstheoryisdifferentfrommodernmedicine.Therefore,the languages of Western countries lack corresponding words and terms of traditionalChinese Medicine, posing a great challenge to the standardization of TCM terminology(李照国 2008). Such a situation makes it difficult for TCM translators and interpretersto convey the ideas of TCM accurately. As a result, there exist no standard answers tothe interpretation.

Apart from TCM terms, terms of Western Medicine are also widely used in everyaspect of treatment in the clinic. Doctors in this TCM hospital mainly treat patientsbased on TCM theory and prescribe Chinese medicine. However, the reporter findsWestern Medicine is a necessity in the TCM hospital, for most of the diagnoses rely onWestern Medicine, and many drugs have to be Western medicine.

The reporter tried to choose simple and appropriate words to make theinternational students understand the treatment, the prescription, and the doctor’sadvice.

2.2 Difficulty in On-site Information Integration

Interpretation is a combination of information receiving, information processing,and information producing.The first step of receiving matters so that the interpreter canstart the next two steps; otherwise, the interpreting can be reduced to failure at the verybeginning. In the information receiving period, chances are that some information maybe missed unavoidably by the interpreter, causing the utter misunderstanding andconfusion of the listeners.

Thispartillustratesdifferentcausesthataffectingthereporter’sfailurein receiving the information, including confusion about ambiguous expressions and informationloss resulting from polyphonic talking.

2.2.1 Confusion about Ambiguous Expressions

The ambiguous expressions here refers to the unclear meanings expressed by boththe patients and the doctors. The inexperienced reporter could only infer the meaningof those ambiguous expressions. If the reporter couldn’t, she could only omit theinformation. Thus the messages the students received were not complete.
