3.1Acquiring Profession-related Knowledge

In this part, the reporter will pay attention to acquiringTCM knowledge, includingbuilding a bilingual corpus to acquire the medical terms and acquiring TCM basicknowledge concerning Pediatrics.

3.1.1 Building a Bilingual Corpus

In the past two or three decades, with the development and popularization ofmodern computer technology, corpus linguistics has developed rapidly. Currently,corpus construction and research have penetrated various specialties and disciplines.How to build various specialized corpus is one of the development trends of corpuslinguistic research in the future (杜雪琴等 2018).At the same time, to better meet theactual needs in different fields, domestic and foreign language researchers have built orare committed to developing various specialized corpora.

Against this background, the international communication of Chinese medicinehas become increasingly active, and the demand for interpreters and translatorsspecialized in TCM English has increased. However, due to the complexity of TCMlanguage and the relatively vague standard of the English translation of TCM terms, noTCM English corpus has been developed so far. Given the professional, characteristic,and disciplinary development trends of corpus establishment and research, and theurgent need to spreadTCM culture, it is imperative to establish aTCM bilingual corpus(闻永毅、樊新荣 2003).

Conclusion

During the interpreting period, the reporter encountered several problems. Thefirst problem was lack of profession-related knowledge, including unfamiliarity withmedical terms and lack of TCM basic knowledge. The second problem was difficultyin on-site information integration, including confusion about ambiguous expressionsand information loss resulting from polyphonic talking. The third problem was lack ofcross-cultural awareness, insufficient cross-cultural communication and ethicalconflicts of TCM between China andAustralia involved.

Based on these challenges, the reporter concluded three strategies. Firstly, thereporter should acquire profession-related knowledge, including building a bilingualcorpus and acquiring TCM basic knowledge. These methods help the reporteraccumulate profession-related knowledge to ensure the accuracy and fluency of herinterpretation.Secondly,thereportershouldimproveresponsetounexpectedsituations,decoding ambiguous expressions andensuringinformation integrity byfocusing ononecase involved. She learnt from the interpreting process that “analyzing”, “searching”,and “asking” could be three important ways to help understand the ambiguousexpressions. Besides, focusing on one case was a necessity to ensure the integrity ofinformation, and other cases that talked polyphonically should be interpreted after the complete case was interpreted. Thirdly, the reporter ought to enhance cross-culturalawareness, including enhancing cross-cultural communication and understanding theethical conflicts of TCM between China andAustralia. The reporter should know moreabout the foreign students’ scope of knowledge through communication.
