The Position of Blend Words in English Vocabulary. English is a vivid and expressive langauge. Its expressiveness lies partly in its variety of word-forination. English new words can be formed by different means:de rivation, composition ' conversion, ba ck-form ation, abbrevia tion, ac-ronyms, shortening, borrowing, onomatopeia, etc. In all these ways of.
coining words derivation and composition are most common. But some of the word-formations which were not active in the past are now demon-strating more vitality. Blending is one of the best exaiiiples of this kind.
In modern English, especially in modern American English, the number of words coined by way of blending is growing rapidly. Now blending has already become one of the principal means of niaking new words.
The biggest source for new words today is the advance of
Science and technology. Many new areas and achievements in science and technology are vividly illustrated by newly coined blend words, which are increasing so fast that most of them are not found in dictionaries- Therefore, a deep-going study of blend words is one of the iinportant and urgent tasks in learning English new vocabulary.
Main Areas in Which Blend Words Occur. English blends, which were originally called portmanteau words, are an interesting language phenoin-enon. At first they were coined by writers who got part of thesound and nieaning of one word iiiixed with that of another to create puns andterms of mockery. Now they begin to appear in appreciable nuinbers, and to be regarded as a set pattern of word-formation that can produce seri-ous and permanent additions to the vocabulary. Nowadays when people use the blend word `brunch"(from breakfast and lunchj, they do not really mean any fun of it. Now people in Britain, especially in America, are making more and more words by way of blending to name new things and to express new notions.
