Chapter One   Introduction
1 .1 A General Description of the Study
    Cohesion is an important feature of text. Whether a group of sentences can comprise a text is determined by the cohesive relationships between sentences. It is just these cohesive relationships that bring about texture. The study about cohesion is an important part in the study of text linguistics both at home and abroad.
    Cohesion is a semantic concept, and also an important concept in text analysis. Halliday and Hasan (1976) made a systematic study of it for the first time, and the beginning of textual cohesion theory was marked by the publication of the book Cohesion in English. They divided cohesion into grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.
    With the development of discourse analysis and textual translation, cohesion is studied in a much wider scope. More and more researchers begin to study the relationship between cohesion and writing, cohesion and reading, cohesion and translation. There are also some linguists who make contrastive studies of cohesive devices between English and Chinese, and also about the effects contrastive studies have on translation.
    Researches on textual cohesion theory and contrast of textual cohesion have been dealt with extensively both at home and abroad. But with regard to university introductions especially the study from the perspective of textual cohesion, very few people have shown any interest in it. For this reason, it is original for the author to do research on domestic university introductions from the perspective of textual cohesion, and this research will be of some use to the C-E translation of university introductions.
1.2 Background and Motivation of the Study
As Chinese higher education develops fast, and academic exchanges between Chinese universities and foreign universities have become more and more frequent, the number of foreign students coming to China for study and Chinese students going abroad for furthering their studies has grown rapidly. Choosing an appropriate university is the premise of studying in China for foreign students, and how can one do this? The commonest way is to browse through university web profiles in order to get the general information of a university. Contrast of both Chinese and English versions of domestic university introductions can make it convenient for foreign students to be familiar with a Chinese university. As a result, this study is of great practical value.
