1.1 The Background of the Study

More and more scholars havebegun to attach to the importance of communicative essence of translation. There have beenmany researches and studies on news translation from English to Chinese. They mainly involvesome translation theories and the stylistic characteristics. For instance, the translator should begood at lexical distinction and interlingual transformation (Zeng Qingfeng，2001)，andtranslation should have the characteristics of clarity and objectivity(Zhang Jian, 2001)，thetranslator should possess social knowledge，master news stylistic and proper terms. (LiuXuncheng，2002) The scholars apply different translation theories to the news translation, forinstance, “faith”，“expressiveness”，and “elegance”，proposed by YanFu, the functionalequivalence, proposed by Nida, and the communicative translation put forward by Newmark.They have interpreted the essence, methods and the principle of news translation fromapproaches of journalism，linguistics and stylistics. This thesis will aim to explore newstranslation from a different perspective: pragmatic approach.
Relevance theory，which was proposed by D. Sperber & D. Wilson, has a considerableimpact on western linguistic fields in recent years. In the past few decades，its influence has faxexceeded the field of pragmatics, which is considered to be the essence of cognitive pragmatictheory. Relevance theory is mainly concerned with communication and cognition. Verbal communication can be regarded as an ostensive-inferential cognitive process, which reflectscognitive characteristics of human brains in information processing. Translation can beconsidered as a kind of communication. In 1991，Gutt completed and published his Ph.Ddissertation, Translation and Relevance: Cognition and Context, his theory can almost refreshpeople's macro understanding of translation. From the perspective of relevance theory,translation is a dual ostensive-inferential cognitive process. He analyzed the application ofrelevance theory in various translation phenomena，proved the powerful explanatory andapplicability of relevance theory in translation, and thus opened a new field of translationstudies.This thesis attempts to study strategies and methods of English news translation from theperspective of relevance theory, which will mainly explain the basic concepts of relevancetheory, present the important principles and state the theoretical basis applied to the translationof English news. In addition, the thesis will analyze the characteristics of English news，andexplore the English news translation strategies under the guidance of relevance theory, so as tosettle the practical problems of English news translation.

1.2 The Purpose of the Study
