　　1.2 Motivations for the Study研究动机
　　In Chinese literature, especially poetry，numerals are widely used. The poets'preference of using numerals in their works results from both the rhythmical and artisticrequirements of the poetry. The numerals convey fuzziness, from which rich culturalimages and artistic conceptions can be expressed in Chinese poetry，especially the classicalpoetry. For example:“ 一去二三里，烟村四五家。亭台六七座，八九十枝花。”（《山村咏怀》邵康节）One takes a walk for two or three stretches，Sees the cooking smoke from four or five villages.Passes six or seven pavilions and houses,And picks flowers on eight, nine, ten branches.A short poem as it is, numerals from “一” (one) to “十” (ten) are successivelyexpressed. In a unique and perfect way，the poem describes such a tranquil and beautifulcountry that the readers can see the vivid scene. However，how should we understand thesenumerals? What are their functions? How should we translate them into English? Thisthesis mainly concerns about these problems.

　　Under the guidance of theories of ftizziness and translation equivalence, the authorcites a great many examples and compares different translation versions to analyze flizzynumerals in Chinese classical poetry and its English translation.

　　1.4 Objectives of the Study研究目标
　　Firstly, the author aims at studying fuzzy numerals in Chinese classical poetry in hopeof providing some resources to studies on flizzy linguistics and helping bettercomprehension of the poetry.Secondly, the author hopes that this thesis can offer several new and constructivesuggestions on English translation of fuzzy numerals in Chinese classical poetry.

　　The thesis can be divided into six chapters.Chapter one generally introduces the study, including the background, motivations,methodology, objectives and structure of the thesis.Chapter two is the theoretical framework. The theories of flizziness and translationequivalence are illustrated as the theory guidance for the thesis.Chapter three introduces fuzziness in Chinese classical poetry, which is of three typesand their translation.Chapter four expounds the fuzzy numerals in Chinese classical poetry, including theirdefinition, classification, causes and functions.Chapter five analyzes English translation of fuzzy numerals in Chinese classical poetry.Translation difficulties, principles and strategies are all involved.Chapter six is the conclusion of the thesis. At the same time, it puts forward thelimitations of this study and the suggestions for later studies.
