　　Six chapters of a Floating Life was an autobiography written by Shen Fu, ascholar born in 1763 in the Qing Dynasty. The title of the book is derived from a lineof Li Bai's poem, “Our floating life is like a dream; how often can one enjoyoneself?”(Lin Yutang，2009: Preface) It originally contains six chapters, but the lasttwo are missing and now only the first four chapters remain，namely，Wedded Bliss,The Little Pleasures of Life, Sorrow and The Joys of Travel according to Lin Yutang'sversion. The extant version was first published in 1877 by Yang Yinch，uan, whopicked it up from a secondhand bookstore. In each of the remaining four chapters, itcovers a different topic. Chapter 1——“Wedded Bliss” describes Shen Fu and hiswife's happiness of wedded life; Chapter 2——“The Little Pleasure of Life” narratesthe entertainment they had for killing time and finding enjoyment, includingdescription of potted landscape, planting, cooking etc.; Chapter 3——“Sorrow” dealswith the fortune and misfortune they had experienced and the positive attitude theyheld; Chapter 4 ——“The Joys of Travel，’ records the traveling experience the authorhad. From the known headings of the last two chapters，we know that the FifthChapter recorded his experiences in Formosa, while the Sixth Chapter contained theauthor's reflections on the way of life.(Ibid) As a romantic and passionate lover of artand beauty，Shen Fu suffered many misfortunes throughout all his life. In his forties,he endured a big loss in his life the loss of his three relatives，wife, son and father,and failure in career. His intention to write the book is to memorize his wife andexpress his sadness, his joys and reflective observation on life and aspiration for truelove, freedom and beauty. After reading the whole book, what strikes people most isabout the author，s marriage, his virtuous wife Chen Yun, who is one of the loveliestwomen in Chinese literature. (Ibid) As a lover for life，the couple searches for asimple and leisurely life, but come into the conflict with the worldly reality and suffermany hardships. Although the lovely couple lives a poor life, they are still full ofself-content. Their true spirit, lofty ideas and sad ending have deeply touched manyreaders.Six chapters of a Floating Life has a high literary value which involves in allaspects of Chinese culture.
