Chapter 1 Introduction

This thesis addresses two important issues concerning hendiadic structures of“ nice and’，and “good and，，. On one hand, it focuses on the adjective collocates of“nice and，，and “good and，，. Apart from finding out semantic features and syntacticfeatures of the adjective collocates of the two patterns, the present paper also attemptsto examine the similarities and differences between the two patterns. On the other hand,the thesis turns to the practical level —dig into translation of the two hendiadicstructures—to provide valuable Reference for language teaching. In order to obtain thefindings, representative samples are necessary and thus the British National Corpus(BNC) is selected for the extraction of sentences which contain hendiadic structures of“nice ancP and “good and'. This chapter presents background information, purposeand significance, research questions and layout of the thesis.

1.1 Background Information

Hendiadys is a rhetorical device which stems from Roman poems in ancientGreek. This figure of speech is commonly used in the language of English and iswidely applied to various writing styles of English. With the evolution anddevelopment of language, the figure of speech—hendiadys—has undergone evolutionand development as well. It has been much more frequently used than ever before. Onone hand, the number of hendiadic expression forms is increasing; on the other hand,the frequency of a certain kind of hendiadic expression form is on the rise.According to the existing studies and findings, hendiadys mainly has fourcategories of expression forms, including "noun and noun", “verb and verb”，“adj. andadj." and “adverb and adverb”. In modem English, most of the hendiadic forms havebecome common occurrences, even though not all the words can be applied in such ahendiadic form. Among the various expression forms of hendiadys, examples of “nounand noun” are frequently seen in literature works; the form of “verb and verb” occupiesa large portion in spoken English; and examples of “adverb and adverb" are in a rathersmall number and comply with conventional usage. It is worth noting that the "adj. andadj." form，in particular, occurs much more frequently in both written and spokenEnglish. Take the following two sentences as examples;He could tell with point a good and spicy story.It was nice and cold in winter.These two sentences are typical examples of hendiadys. It is obvious thathendiadys has a special structure: two words of the same part of speech are combinedtogether by the conjunction and; besides, the two words preceding and following theconjunction and are not of equal importance. Based on the already gained knowledgeconcerning hendiadys, hendiadys refers to the expression of an idea by the use ofusually two independent words connected by and (as nice and warm) instead of theusual combination of an independent word and its modifier (as nicely warm). Inaccordance with the usage of hendiadys, it is reasonable to regard hendiadic structuresas a whole. Thus, good and spicy here may refer to as extremely spicy，while nice andcold can be explained as very cold. Such explanation is much closer to the context andmuch more persuasive. When explanation is done, more questions regarding the formand translation of hendiadic structures may be proposed.
