When faced withhendiadic structures, students are at a loss and do not know how to cope with thesestructures, in particular, in translation practice. The lack of knowledge concerninghendiadys leads to problems in translation and difficulty in understanding certain texts.The present study provides solution to the above problems. For students, it helps toenlarge their range of language abilities and reduce their errors in translation andunderstanding practice. For teachers,it will help the teachers to become aware of theimportance of hendiadys in students’ understanding and translation practice and thenorganize and arrange their teaching activities appropriately.Moreover, this study can be seen as a demonstration for investigating otherhendiadic patterns. The research method in this paper is possible to be applied in theexploration of other “adj. and adj.” hendiadic patterns other than “nice ancT and “goodancT and furthermore into other hendiadic expression forms. It is proved to have broadapplications.In a word, the current study is beneficial not only from the theoretical perspective butalso on the practical level. With the findings of the study, researchers can carry outfarther studies; teachers and students will have a better understanding and applicationof this figure of speech.1.3 Research QuestionsThe present paper is to study the use of such hendiadic structures of "nice and"、and “good ancT with the material from British National Corpus (BNC). Generally4speaking, the topic will be examined from the perspective of adjective collocates andtranslation skills of such structures. Through analyses of adjective collocates thatfollow hendiadic structures of “nice ancT and “good and,、both semantic features andsyntactic features of such structures can be summarized. With the theoretical basis ofhendiadys,together with the examples from the British National Corpus, translation ofhendiadic structures will be illustrated. To be more specific, the following questionswill be examined in the paper:1. What are the semantic features of adjective collocates following hendiadicstructures of “nice and"' and “good ancT'l2. What are the syntactic features of hendiadic structures of “nice and" and “goodancT'?3. What are the similarities and differences between hendiadic structures of “nz.ceand' and "good ancTl4. How to translate hendiadic structures of “nice ancT and ''good and' intoChinese?In the first research question, frequent adjective collocates that follow “nice ancTand '''good ancT will be listed, which enriches the original scope of collocates thatpeople have already gained. In addition, semantic classifications of these collocateswill be done. The second research question explores the syntactic features of hendiadicstructures of “nice ancT and “good ancT、including sequence of the adjectivespreceding and following the conjunction and together with syntactic function ofhendiadic structures of''nice ancT and “good and".The above questions constitute the major part of the paper. In order to acquireanswers to these questions, a considerable amount of data needs to be collected andthen analyses can be conducted systematically.
