Therefore, it is necessary tofind out more frequently used collocates in hendiadic structures and generalize thesemantic and syntactic features of such hendiadic structures so as to enrich linguisticfield and actual usage. Thus the thesis is inspired and developed.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study

As it has been mentioned in the above, hendiadys is an important figure of speech;it expresses a single idea through two words connected by the conjunction and, whichis of great importance not only in terms of the understanding of syntactic structure, butalso in terms of semantics. However, up to the present, research aimed at the study ofhendiadys is relatively scarce. In some books about English rhetoric devices,2hendiadys is not even mentioned. The few remaining studies of hendiadys pay muchattention to the expression forms of hendiadys and most of them are in Chinese. Manyscholars concern more about the hendiadic structures of “noun and noun” and “verband verb" than the ‘‘adj. and adj.” structure. Findings of unique features of hendiadysare even less noticed. Even though those works help to understand the base form ofhendiadys, most of them merely focus on the theoretical level and lack practical valueto some extent.The present paper still deals with hendiadys; the topic is narrowed down directlypointing to hendiadic patterns of "nice ancT and “good ancT. However, the researchcontent covers a wider range than before. The inspiration of the selection of ''nice ancTand '"good and" in this study lies in that this hendiadic expression form —“adj. andadj."—has come into occurrence in the English textbooks and students put on negativeperformance. In addition, adjectives are powerful in expressing attitudes of humanbeings and play an important role in students' practical language use. Students wouldlike to master a large number of words and expressions to describe and modify theirspeech. In avoidance of misunderstanding and for the purpose of enriching students'language knowledge, this study is in need. By combining theory with practicallanguage usage, the paper attempts to investigate into the usage of “nice ancT and“good and'' so as to provide valuable reference for language learning and teachingpractices.The current study is of both theoretical and practical significance. Theoreticallyspeaking, it adds new information to the previous studies and provides more detailedanalyses of hendiadys, which offers valuable reference for language researchers. As animportant figure of speech, hendiadys has aroused the attention of researchers andlinguists. It can be seen that in hendiadic structures, the two words are connected bythe conjunction and. With the conjunction and, the structure of “nice ancT and “goodancT may be undergoing the process of grammaticalization. From the level of syntacticstructure, both of these two structures can be deemed as grammatical structure sinceneither the word “nice” nor ''good" seems to have content word meaning in thestructure. The reason of such phenomenon may be attributed to the semanticimplications of the conjunction and; thus hendiadys can not be separated fromsemantics as well as syntactic structure.
