the historical points of view, the book generalizes the laws of evolvement ofbody languages and points out the gradual and systematic characteristic of bodylanguage change and compares the ability of word formation of body languages inChinese.In Li jing’s thesis Hand and its Cultural Studies (2007), through mappings fromconcrete onto abstract and spatial domain, he proves that “Hand” contains a lot ofcultural information, and it is a result of the model “近取诸身，远取诸物” of Hannationality. And, metaphor as an important cognitive mechanism, plays an importantrole in extending semantic meanings of hands.Shao Jian’s (2005) Studies on Body Metaphors-Hand as an Example also providemetaphorical mechanism of “Hand” metaphors, and explain the process of derivationof each lexical meaning.Wang Qun and Qi Zhenhai’s (2005) Structural Analysis on Words With Handsanalyses the semantic categories of hands by way of cognitive method (metonymyand metaphor), and image schemas. After research on “Hand” diachronically, theartical reveals the similarities between the development of vocabularies and thestructure of the objective world.

1.5 Research Design and Data Collection

This thesis adopts corpora-based approach. First, I select all of the “Hand”idioms mainly from three dictionaries in Chinese and English. The Chinesedictionaries are Xinhua Dictionary (2013), The Great Chinese Dictionary (2010) andModern Chinese Dictionary (2012), and the English dictionaries include1.6 Organization of the ThesisChapter One is the introductory part which consists of research background,significance and organization of the study, along with literature review, mainlyreferring to previous cognitive studies on polysemous word “Hand” and bodymetaphors. Chapter Two sets up the theoretical framework that I will apply in thisthesis. In this chapter, the concepts of experimentalism, metaphor, metonymy,polysemy, the relationship between polysemy and metaphor and metonymy, and themetaphorical and metonymical motivations for idioms are introduced. Chapter Threeis a case study. Each lexical meaning of polysemous word “手” in Chinese and “hand”in English is quantified and their semantic categories are compared. Chapter Fouraddresses the motivations for different semantic senses of “Hand” idioms fromcognitive linguistic perspectives, and the conclusion about cognitive universality andcross-culture difference is drawn. Chapter Five again emphasizes my findings in thethesis and presents limitations of my study.
