hapter Three Linguistic Features of Legal English and Translation
Strategies Legal English, as an instrumental language, is a customary language used in professional realms. Though based on Standard English, legal English includes a number of its own features. Thus this chapter will state the linguistic features of legal English by citing some examples in the translation project and fumble for the correct translation skills and strategies applied in its corresponding translation.
3.1 Features of Legal English Vocabulary
3.1.1 Use of Ordinary Words with Special Meanings
As noted above, legal English is based on Standard English but differs from it in a number of ways; hence legal English vocabulary naturally inherits some features of general English, however added with new legal meanings – that is some familiar words may have two different meanings in the eyes of the general public and legal practitioners (Wang Guanghan, 1999). Conclusion
After translating this project, the author has drawn a number of experiences in person. First of all, a translator must have solid language competence, both in source language and target language, in that fluent E-C and C-E translation are a necessity to an excellent translator. Secondly, besides language competence, a good translator should possess a large scope of knowledge, especially in some professional field. Moreover, rigorous and responsible attitude is extremly required for a translator. Preparation beforehand is of great importance, including relevant background knowledge, professional terms of art and jargons. This translation project for instance, contains extensive professional knowledge, which are strange and difficult to the author and can only be understood through various advanced preparation. During the translating process, a large amount of time and efforts have been taken to apprehend the original text, study the features of legal English, and verify the meanings of legal jargons and terms of art, in which way a good translation can be generated. In this translation practice, the author has learned a great deal about legal English, but in the meanwhile felt the limitations of legal knowledge. The related knowledge and translation skills still need to be furnished through long-
