Chapter 3 Analysis of the Chinese Version The Woman Warrior From the Perspective of Translation Norms

3.1 The Woman Warrior and Its Chinese Version 
The  Woman  Warrior:  Memoirs  of  a  Girlhood  Among  Ghost  was  written  by Maxine  Hong  Kingston,  a  celebrated  Chinese  American  writer.  She  has  won numerous  awards  and  garnered  the  reputation  for  being  the  most  widely  read, anthologized,  and  taught  “living  creature”  of  our  time  (Wang,  2007:9).  Throughout her life, she has been devoting herself to literary writing as well as social and political activities.  Up  to  present,  she  has  already  written  three  novels  and  several  works  of nonfiction  concerning  the  life  experience  of  Chinese  immigrants  living  in  America. Due  to  her  great  contributions  to  Chinese  American  Literature,  Kingston  won  such awards  as  the  National  Book  Award  in  1981,  the  National  Humanities  Medal bestowed  by  President  Clinton  in  1997  and  the  Northern  California  Book  Award Special Award in 2007, and so on. Just as Wang Jennie pointed out that Kingston has become  the  “Muse”  of  the  “guardian  angel”  in  Chinese  American  literary  world (Wang, 2007:11).

Conclusion

Inspired  by  Toury’s  translation  norm  theory,  this  thesis  firstly  explores  the Chinese version of The Woman Warrior under the initial norm and preliminary norm, which takes into consideration politics, economy, culture, ideology and so on. Then, it probes into the influence of operational norms on the translation activity in detail. In  the  beginning,  this  thesis  briefly  introduces  The  Woman  Warrior  and  its Chinese version. Then it discusses the initial norms in the Chinese translation of The Woman Warrior, including the selection of the text and the co-translators’ conformity to  the  norms  of  the  target  culture.  We  find  out  that  the  external  social  and  cultural background  in  the  1990s  as  well  as  the  initiators  and  the  co-translators’  personal motivations have exerted a great impact on the selection and translation of the text.
