Chapter One   Introduction

1.1   Background and Significance of the Study 
In cognitive linguistics, cognitive linguists observe and study language from the perspective of cognition. Therefore, language is the result of human cognition of the objective  world.  Construal  operation  proposed  by  Langacker  is  a  kind  of  human cognition.That  is  to  say,  in  order  to  express  our  mind,  people  have  the  cognitive ability  to  observe  and  explain  the  same  objective  world  from  different  scope  and background,  perspective,  salience  and  level  of  specificity,  and  form  the  language expression.  As  for  translation,  it  includes  the  transformation  in  different  languages. Each translator has his own construal means in terms of the same situation, which will lead to different versions in target languages. That is to say, the process of construal operation,  namely  the  process  of  the  four  dimensions  from  scope-background, perspective, and salience to specificity greatly exists in the process of translation, and affects the translators. Construal  operation  from  the  perspective  of  cognitive  linguistics  explains  why people  produce  different  language  expressions  in  the  same  situation,  so  it  also  can explain why different translators adopt various translation strategies and evaluate the different  English  translation  of  Chang  Sheng  Dian;  Most  scholars  do  study  on construal  operation,  but  most  of  them  are  limited  on  one  of  the  four  dimensions separately,  fewer  papers  analyze  the  four  dimensions  on  the  whole,  and sub-classifications  of  the  four  dimensions  are  rarely  mentioned  or  innovated.
