摘要:本文是英语翻译论文,本文从零翻译的分类、本质、与翻译的关系、与译者的关系四个方面对零翻译问题进行了反思。目前对零翻译有所研究的学者大多认同邱懋如教授的分类,认为零翻译包括了音译、省译与移译;除此之外,还有少部分学者将音义兼译、象译、直译加注、补偿式翻译归入其中。

Last but not least, this thesis will adopt inductive method to find out the relationship of zero translation to other closely related concepts.

Chapter 2 Origin and Development of Zero Translation
2.1 The origin of zero translation
The term Zero Translation was first used in Professor Du Zhengming’s paper “A Socio-Linguistic and Intercultural Perspective on Free, Literal, and Zero-Translation” in 2000. Professor Du (2000) uses this term to translate Buyi (不译) and he covers transliteration and the transferring of the source language without any change. In Du’s (2000) opinion, zero translation is a kind of translation
strategy which can be paralleled with free translation and literal translation, and it is not because one is not able to translate but he actively chooses not to translate after comparison of its effect with that of translating. In 2001, Professor Qiu Maoru issued this paper “Translatability” and Zero Translation, and used the Chinese term Ling Fanyi (零翻译, “Zero Translation” in English),and from then on, this topic officially entered the research scope of translation scholars in China. With different Chinese counterparts, zero translation has seemed to have the potential of causing confusion since its birth.

2.2 The development of zero translation
When the concept zero translation emerged, Jia Ying (2002) wrote a paper indicating that untranslatabililty should be admitted instead of bringing up zero translation to maintain the rationality of translatability because untranslatability is caused by incommensurability between different languages and cultures. This idea has denied the conceptual rationale of zero translation from the philosophical level. At the same time on the basis of identifying with and adopting Qiu’s zero translation, Liu Mingdong (2002) divides it into absolute zero translation and relative zero translation with eight specific means.
