摘要:本文是英语翻译论文,本文从零翻译的分类、本质、与翻译的关系、与译者的关系四个方面对零翻译问题进行了反思。目前对零翻译有所研究的学者大多认同邱懋如教授的分类,认为零翻译包括了音译、省译与移译;除此之外,还有少部分学者将音义兼译、象译、直译加注、补偿式翻译归入其中。

5.1 The connotation of translation
The existence of different languages and urgency of communication have brought life to translation, so translation is absolutely based on two systems of language, and the most basic condition of translation is the change from one language to another language. From ancient times to nowadays, from China to the west, there are many understandings and definitions of translation, Eugene A. Nida (1969:12) thinks that “Translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language (SL) message, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style.” In A Linguistic Theory of Translation, Catford (1965:20) defines translation as “ the replacement of textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language (TL).” Wang Kefei (1997) gives the definition that translation is a kind of human practical activity through which a language is converted into another language, and the broad translation of Huang Zhonglian (2000:14-15) means that translators convert cultural information of the source language into the target language to meet the special needs of thinking activities and language activities of readers. These definitions all have their own emphasis, but most of them have a common point, that is, translation is about two languages.

Conclusion
Zero translation is a concept bringing about many confusions and arguments, and after 16 years, there is still no consensus. This thesis is a critical reflection on the study of zero translation. The first chapter is a general introduction of the thesis, and the next three chapters pay more attention to zero translation itself, including its origin, development, status quo, classification and essence. Chapter 2 is a diachronic study to see during the 16 years how the study on zero translation proceeded and which step has the study achieved. Next is the analysis of the bone of contention, i.e. classification of zero translation, including transliteration, omission, transference and some other relevant concepts, to pay the way for the latter analysis.
