As read from the data analysis, different types of tasks contribute to the retentionof formulaic sequences to varied degrees. Regardless of the involvement loads thatthese tasks induce, they all can be considered as the realization of comprehensibleoutput in the classroom environment. According to the comprehensible outputhypothesis (Swain, 1985), output is not only the ultimate purpose of language learning,but also is a means to promote one’s language learning proficiency. Comprehensibleoutput plays a critical role in SLA, which functions as triggering noticing, testhypothesis, and representing metalinguistic features. Of them, the noticing triggeringfunction is the most important.Van Patten (1996) argues that attention is the prerequisite of learning, whichmeans that learning takes place under the condition of information being noticed. Heassumes that it is hard for learners to notice the functional forms in the output withoutbeing compelled to switch their attention to it. In language learning, “people learnabout the things that they attend to and do not learn much about the things they do notattend to” (Schmitt, 2001: 30). The noticing trigger function of the comprehensibleoutput opens the way for successful language learning. What the participants takingpart in the face-to-face interview reported is presented below. The three different typesof tasks, which are the embodiment of output cause participants’ different levels ofnoticing. In doing Task 1, participants first of all had a quick look at the wholesentences and kept the missing information in mind; and then chose the properformulaic sequences to fill in blank. In doing Task 2, participants also first skimmedthe whole sentences in order to grasp the general meaning of it; then they fixed theirattention to the target formulaic sequences to look at how they fitted into the context.At last, they dealt with the translation, which mainly focused on that of formulaicsequences.
