The scholars did their studies in China in the beginning, and then they went to HongKong and Macao and even went abroad for more practical studies. On summer vacations inthe year 2004 and 2005, members of “C-E translation of public signs” squad in BeijingInternational Study University flied to 17 cities of 11 European countries to carry out theirresearches. They took over three thousand pictures of public signs and a ten-hour videotapeand other first-hand materials.3. The researches develop from individual ones to group ones. It starts from Beijing andspreads to other cities in a short time. In the year 2002, “C-E translation of public signsresearch centre” was found in Beijing International Study University which marked thebeginning of group research for translation of public signs. In June, 2005, the China Dailywebsite and University of International Business and
Economics co-held an activity to helppeople recognize and regulate bilingual signs in public places. The Beijing government heldthis one as well and opened up a website for it.Researches towards the translation of public signs are attracting more and more people. The first seminar of national translation of public signs was held in China in September, 2005.Huang Youyi (2005) pointed out that translation of public signs still has a long way to go.Error translation of public signs can be seen everywhere, such as streets, schools, shoppingplaces, bus stations and other public places. After 21stcentury, more and more articles have been published in various kinds ofjournals, such as Foreign Languages, Shanghai Journal of Translation for
Science andTechnology and Chinese Translators Journal. A great number of scholars did their researcheson C-E translation of public signs and I will give a brief introduction to some of theirconcepts in the following passages.Lü Hefa (2005) thinks that there are four significant functions of public signs: directing, prompting, restricting and compelling. He also analyzes the dynamic and static meanings andlinguistic features of public signs. He proposes that the first thing one should do in the processof C-E translation of public signs is to take normative and standard vocabularies intoconsideration. The final translation should be shown to foreigners to make sure there is noambiguousness before its appearance to the public.Wang Yinquan (2006), Wan Zhengfang (2004) and Jin Long (2005) explain a wide rangeof error translation of public signs in public places in China and put forwards concrete andfeasible suggestions as well as related methods and laws.He Xuegeng (2006) points out that when it comes to public signs translation, thetranslators should be familiar with its linguistic and functional features, its cultural differences, and then put the cultural habits of the readers in the first place. Only in this way can we offerthe best translation.Li Changjiang (2003) analyzes features of public security signs and comes up with somemodels for C-E translation from the perspective of pragmatics.Tang Xiaotian and Tang Yanfang (2005) reveal the stylistic features of road signs in anaesthetic perspective and propose aesthetic principles and strategies for translation of publicsigns.Yu Qiu and Huang
