Introduction引言

塞缪尔兰霍恩克莱门斯(1835–1910),更好地称由马克吐温这个笔名,是美国幽默作家,讲师。他是一个多才的writersin美国文学史。Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835–1910), better known by the pen name of Mark
Twain, is an American humorist, lecturer and writer. He is one of the most prolific writers
in the history of American literature. His works include a large number of novels, short
stories, https://www.51lunwen.org/literaturearts/ one autobiography and several plays. Twain is most noted for his sister novels The
Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885). The
latter has been called the Great American Novel.
Twain enjoys immense public popularity, and his keen wit and incisive satire earn
him praise from both critics and peers. The American author William Faulkner called him
“the father of American literature.” In William Dean Howells’s eyes, Mark Twain is “the
Lincoln of American literature”. All those comments reflect Mark Twain’s great
achievements and his distinguished position in American literary history.
Mark Twain’s novels reproduce his times, mirroring the essence of contemporary
social life. Reading his novels, we can appreciate his distinctive wisdom conveyed in his
natural and smooth narration. His writings depict the social reality, sharply criticize the
social evils or social injustices while exploring human nature and probing into the
significance of life. What is more striking is his writing techniques. He abandons the
common writing style taken by most writers; instead, he adopts humor, and spreads it
across all his novels, which then seem to be a gallery of comic stories. Seldom has a writer
had such a good sense of humor like him. Reading his novels, we taste his humor and its
underlying profound wisdom. He does not write only for humor’s sake; instead, he uses
humor to express his wisdom, which helps to enhance his humor. In a word, his humor is
born together with wisdom. This is the reason why Mark Twain surpasses other humorists.
He makes use of humor and laughter to expose the society, express his understanding of
life and explore issues of universal human relevance.

As the best-known American humorist, Mark Twain employs his exposure to earlySouthwestern humor in his writing through a blending of many of its facets into his own
style. Whereas early Southwestern humorous sketches created a “gentleman” narrator who
condescendingly described a “frontier clown” figure, Twain fuses the two characters. He
transforms the vernacular figure and the narrator into one character who no longer
condescends to laugh at the expense of others, but who creates humor from his own
mishaps and naiveté. “This character allows for a more complex psychological study of
societal issues and allows Twain to examine the American mind with more complexity
than earlier Southwestern humorists.”1
Among Mark Twain’s large collection of writings, The Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn (Huck Finn for short hereafter) is regarded as a piece of work which can best
represent his writing talents partly because it gives full play to humor. This paper will take
this novel as the text, probe into its world of humor, and search for the underlying论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
