1.1 The Loss of Self-Identity:Out of the Seemingly RespectableHost Country America

With the end of the First world war,the process of economic,political andcultural globalization is also accelerating.The number of people drifting around theworld for various reasons has increased sharply,forming an huge wave ofimmigration.One of these waves is the Boyce family in the novel Brown Girl,Brownstones.In the early 20th century,they came to Brooklyn,New York with thewave of Barbados immigrants.Physically,they left from Barbados in the West Indiato America on account of the sluggish economy of Barbados and the cruel colonialrules of white people.These Barbadian immigrants chose to emigrate to the UnitedStates in order to get away from the colony and improve their living conditions.Lefebvre holds the view that there is a close relation between space and humanbecause space combines all human’s activities as well as a variety of socialrelationships.He thinks“nature produces the human being;and the human being inturn,produces at once history,knowledge and self-consciousness”(Lefebvre,1991:68).Father Deighton Boyce and daughter Selina Boyce have experienced the loss oftheir self-identity in the physical space,either in the family space,community space,or the host country America.And they make a choice to leave their home in Americafor their homeland Barbados because both the small family of them and the countryAmerica are unhome for them from now on.

1.2 The Loss of Ethnic Identity：Out of the Devastated Family ofBlood

The house is the physical existence of the home,but the home also includes themore important content,namely the family members.Defining whether the home isthe decisive factor between family members is love,affection or indifference,hatred,only when the relationship between family members is in a happy and harmoniousstate,the house will be sweet and bright.On the contrary,when the home becomes asoulless and indifferent dwelling in which one lives as if one is wandering,it willhave a negative effect on one’s mentality.Those who are vulnerable may evenabandon themselves or become obsessed with an illusion,resulting in the loss of theiridentity.“Ethnic identity refers to the choice of cultural subjects between two distinctcultural groups or subgroups.Because of the influence of different cultures,thiscultural subject must regard one culture as the group cultural self and the other cultureas the other”(Tao,2004).As an imaginary community,the nation must rely on itsown cultural inheritance to ensure its cultural unity.“This includes folklore,mythology,literary narratives,cultural symbols,religious rituals,etc.unique to eachnation”(Tao Jiajun,2004).One’s ethnic identity is closely related to its nation’shistory,culture,and traditions.
