Jeffrey Kent Eugenides is an outstanding contemporary writer in America.He,like the protagonist Cal,was born in Detroit,Michigan in 1960s.Like theprotagonist’s grandparents and parents in the novel,Eugenides’grandfather is a Greekimmigrant;his grandmother is an Irish descent;and his parents are native Americansas well.After graduating from Brown University,Eugenides continued to study inStanford University.He received the Master’s degree of English and Creative Writingin 1986.Influenced by Philip Roth who writes novels about Jewish and American,Eugenides writes stories about Greek and American as well.

In 1988,Eugenides’first short story was published,and then his short storieswere collected in major magazines,such as The New Yorker,The Paris Review,TheYale Review,Best American Short Stories,the Gettsberg Review.In 1993,Eugenidespublished his first novel The Virgin Suicide about five mysterious sisters in GrossePoint,Michigan,and the boys whose fortunes are changed forever by them,whichwas translated into more than 30 languages.Later The Virgin Suicide was adopted forthe screen by Sofia Coppola.In 2002,it took him nine years to finish his second novelMiddlesex which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction next year.Middlesex was selectedas one of the top 10 books of 2002 by the Los Angeles Times,the Chicago Tribune,the New York Times book Review,the San Francisco Chronicle,Bookseller,Barnes&Noble,and Amazon.He was on the New York Times,Washington Post,Los AngelesTimes,San Francisco Chronicle bestseller lists.Jeffrey Eugenides has received manyawards to date,including the Guggenheim Research Foundation Award,the NationalEndowment Award for the Arts,the Whiting Prize for Writing,and the Henry D.Woolsel Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.In 2013,hepublished his third novel,a romantic fiction—the Marriage Plot of threeundergraduates’love story from Brown University.The novel was published to greatacclaim,making it one of Amazon’s 10 best Books of the Year and the New YorkTimes’top 10 bestsellers of 2011.
