Elizabeth, insults her and asks her not to marry Mr. Darcy, as showed in Example ( 2 ) :

(2) Lady Catherine: And will you promise never to enter into such an engagement?

Elizabeth:I will not and I certainly never shall.

As a confident and upright girl,Elizabethrejects Lady Catherine’s unreasonable request directly and definitely by uttering " I will not and I certainly never shall", to show her strong anger at Lady Catherine and her determination to pursue the love of Mr. Darcy.

At the ball, Mr. Bingley, a young man of large fortune from the north ofEngland, is attracted byElizabeth’s elder sister Jane, so some days later he invites Jane to his house. Jane asks her mother, Mrs. Bennet, how she go there.

(3) Jane: " Can I have the carriage? ".

Mrs. Bennet: " No, my dear, you had better go on horseback, because it seems likely to rain; and then you must stay all night. "

Mrs. Bennet sincerely hopes her daughters could marry rich men, and she is gald to see Mr. Bingley has interested in her daughter Jane. She directly refuses her daughter’s carriage suggetion. Here Mrs. Bennet’s direct refuse doesn’t mean to threaten the face of her daughter, while she can’t help making an arragement for her.

3. 1. 2. 1 Expression of Gratitude / Appreciation / Regret

The speaker is first to express appreciation or regret for the addresser’s proposal and then states the refusal. There are two examples aboutElizabethuses this kind of refusal strategy.

(4) Mr Collins: But before I am run away with my feelings perhaps I may state my reasons for marrying.

Elizabeth: " You are too hasty, Sir," she cried. "You forget that I have made no answer. Let me do it without farther loss of time. Accept my thanks for the compliment you are paying me, I am very sensible of the honour of your proposals, but it is impossible for me to do otherwise than decline them."

(5)Darcy : " I beg you, most fervently, to relieve my suffering and consent to be my wife. "

Elizabeth: " I believe the established mode is to express a sense of obligation. But I can not. I have never desired your good opinion, and you have 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
