摘要:The Old Man and the Sea is a song of praise about human sprit. Though the description of the sufferings Santiago endures and his courageous behavior in his fights with the marlin and the Sharks. Hemingway intends to tell us his philosophy of life: Though life is a lonely battle, it is a struggle that man should fight on with courageous and endurance.
The Old Man and the Sea has been hailed as a classic novel which was published in 1952. This novel is about a Cuban fisherman named Santiago who went out into the sea and caught a huge marlin after three days’ patient struggle. On his way home, sharks came and attacked him, Santiago tried his best to fight but failed to prevent the marlin from being eaten. In the end he returned with nothing but the skeleton of the marlin.
At the beginning, Hemingway describes the old man’s appearance vividly, which reflects the writer’s (Ernest Hemingway) philosophy of life. Just like the portrayal below:
“Every day is a new day,” says Santiago. He tells the boy of his plan to end his bad luck .He will take his boat farther6 out, where he believes the big fish lie waiting. They talk about the old man’s hero, the great baseball7 player Joe DiMaggio. Santiago respects DiMaggio because he never gives up despite physical pain.
The old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck. The brown blotches of the benevolent skin cancer cheeks. The blotches well down the sides of his face and his hands had the deep-creased scars from handling heavy fish on the cords. But none of these scars were fresh. Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.
From the above depiction, a visual image of Santiago is presented to us. His appearance shows that he is an usual man who loves fishing profession very much, he believes that he is a strong old man. He has the confidence in catching a real big fish.
Besides, many other descriptions in the novel also show Santiago’s characters and personality, which at the same time reflect Hemingway’s philosophy of life.
2.2 Courage of Facing Difficulties
For eighty-four days, an old Cuban fisherman named Santiago has had no lucky. For eighty-four days, he has prepared his bait, lines, and boat and headed out to the big blue ocean2, only to return tired and empty-handed. Everything about him is old except his eyes. “Cheerful3 and undefeated4,”they are the same color the sea.
While Santiago is preparing for his eighty-fifth attempt, a young boy named Manolin brings him some food and helps him prepare his gear. Manolin used to fish with Santiago, but has been forced by his parents to fish instead with a “Lucky”boat. His parents, like everybody else, think it is only a waste of time to go fishing with the old man.
However, the boy believes in Santiago, who taught him how to fish with all his rich knowledge5 of the sea. For Manolin, Santiago is like a father and teacher. The boy loves and respects the old man, and tells Santiago that he is the best fisherman.
“Every day is a new day,” says Santiago. He tells the boy of his plan to end his bad luck .He will take hi本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
