3.3Devouring Shark vs Destructive Force of the Society
In contrast to the marlin, which stand for a good part of nature, the Shark for the evil side of the natural world. It symbolize the destructive force of the society.
When Santiago is fighting with the marlin, the sea is calm. But the Shark come and destroy the harmony. Further more, the devour the old man’s trophy-the great marlin. like the predators . Santiago hates them very much because they are shy thieves and the deadly creature of the deep. In contrast to his regret over killing each Shark, Santiago feels a little sad. In Hemingway’s real life, there are many “Sharks” around him , which symbolize critics who criticized him and his works .
In the novel of the Old Man and Sea , Hemingway writes that the first Shark Mako is“This was a fish built to feed on all the fishes in the sea , that were so fast and strong and well armed that had no enemy”. Though Mako shark ate a piece of marlin’s meat, Santiago respects it for he is the first shark come and bite the fish .:He is neither a scavenger ,nor just a moving appetite as some Sharks are. He is beautiful and noble and knows no fear of anything. Santiago considers that the Marko Shark is valor handsome, dare to do everything first and has its own strong strength to fight his target. While, in Santiago’s eyes, the other follows Shark are cravens. They only know to bite the place where the first Sharks does. Santiago hates and looks down on them.
When Hemingway did not published any works for ten years then wrote the novel of  Cross the river and into the Tree , there also were two parts of critics : one part real studied Hemingway and his works ,they dare to appraise and criticize Hemingway ,which like the first Shark dare to attack the giant marlin . The other part of critics just likes the following Sharks that only follow those real critics. Those critics are short of courage and their own thought. The only they can do is destroy.
Therefore, to Hemingway the Sharks like these critics who criticize his works and predicate that he can’t write good works anymore and said his talent is exhausted. But the destructive force can motivate a man to struggle to write The Old Man and the Sea to prove that they were wrong.
 
Conclusion
 The Old Man and the Sea is a song of praise about human sprit. Though the description of the sufferings Santiago endures and his courageous behavior in his fights with the marlin and the Sharks. Hemingway intends to tell us his philosophy of life: Though life is a lonely battle, it is a struggle that man should fight on with courageous and endurance. What’s more, man should hold hope and confidence forever, loving life and treasuring life.
