s boat farther out, where he believes that a big fish will turn out. They talk about the old man’s hero, the great baseball player Joe DiMaggio. Santiago respects DiMaggio because he never gives up despite physical pain.
Almost three months , the old man did not catch any fish ,but he bid not lose hope and the courage , he insisted on catching fish on the sea .Meanwhile , he hadn’t eat any food for several days , he was very fired , but then he met a giant fish and he began to catch this big fish . He was so hungry and tired, it was very hard for him to catch this giant fish, but he did not give up, He battled nobody to fight against it bravely until the end. The struggle defines him as a real hero. Though, he lost the marlin, he has won the sea battle.
2.3 Strong Will and Endurance
Unfortunately, sharks, drawn by the fish’s blood, soon come to the boat. They ate the marlin, leaving only the head, skeleton, and tail. However, Santiago is not sad. A man can be destroyed but not defeated, old person's left hand injured in the convulsions, he only could use the right hand, with wooden stick, the mouth and so on all was allowed to use for the weapon self-defense which attacked, and finally expelled this crowd of shark fish. But the big fish's meat was already eaten all most, but the old person also charmingly criticized oneself the left hand "this work time actually was resting " time, I also was subdued by the old person optimistic spirit. In the life, some losses are inevitable, we should treat by the optimistic manner, cannot be calculating.
Although hurt and tired, the old fisherman begins to admire the fish because he feels the fish, like himself, has a strong spirit that will never give up. The fish is like his brother instead of an enemy. Finally, he kills it with a harpoon and ends its pain.
For example, “but, he thought, only I have no luck any more, but who knows? Everyday is a new day”. This sentence shows that Santiago is an optimistic man. He may be lucky, but he is not pessimistic. He believes that everybody is a new start, and the new start will bring him better luck. This gives him a hope that he will hook a big fish in the future. When Hemingway was criticized that he cannot write good novels, he was not defeated. On the contrary, he begins writing works everyday and believed that he would write an excellent novel one day.

The sea is a major symbol in the novel, which stands for the nature and society where man most live in. The sea is boundless, full of various marlins and sharks, full of raging waves and hidden reef. And the sea is cruel, savage and insidious, just like the real world he lives in.
In both sea and life, there are a great deal of possibilities that hidden from the common: some are gifts to be treasured and some are troubles to be over come and defeated. Neither will be found unless man embarks on the journey. If man is lucky
