Chapter OneIntroduction
1.1 Background of the study
As one of the factors that directly measure the quality of education,studentengagement has been deeply studied by researchers.In the field of English learning,foreign researchers have taken the lead in setting foot in the field of student engagement.In recent years,domestic researchers have begun to pay more attention to it and havemade a series of research achievements.Student engagement can reflect the learningstate of students and is an important indicator to predict academic achievement(Zhang,2012).As an important factor affecting learning quality,foreign researchers havediscussed the connotation and construct of student engagement from shallow to deep,and the three-dimensional construct of student engagement has been widely recognizedby researchers(Fredricks,Blumenfield&Paris,2004),and more dimensions have beentaken into consideration in student engagement.
In addition,influential factors of student engagement have always been the focusof research of student engagement.In China,scholars have defined the connotation andconstruct of foreign language student engagement based on the introduction of foreigntheoretical research and practical achievements in recent years,and compiled thestudent engagement scale with exploratory factor analysis and other methods(Guo&Liu,2016;Guo,2018;Ren,2022),providing localized tool for measuring foreignlanguage student engagement.
1.2 Significance of the study
The thesis focuses on the influence of L2 motivational self system on studentengagement,examining the inherent logical influence relationships involved.The thesishas both theoretical and practical significance.
In terms of theoretical significance,this study examines the influence ofdimensions of L2 motivational self system on student by using multiple regressionanalysis.In addition,this study further demonstrates how L2 motivational self systemspecifically influences student engagement by constructing a structural equation modelthat uncovers a chain mediating role of emotional and cognitive engagement.In thestructural equation model,L2 motivational self system is the antecedent variable,emotional and cognitive engagement are intermediate variables,and behavioralengagement is the outcome variable.
In terms of practical significance,this study encourages teachers to interveneappropriately in students’learning process by giving appropriate teacher support tofacilitate students’establishment of proper motivation for learning.In addition,teachersshould pay attention to the level of students’emotional,cognitive,and behavioralengagement.Therefore,this study has theoretical and practical significance,and thestudy is worth further discussion.

2.1.1 Definition of student engagement
